Oprah was competing with Phil Donahue and they didn't think she had a chance. They said relax and be yourself. She said that was the best advice that she ever received. Oprah was not considered a "successful newscaster" because she would get emotional over the news. That turned out to be her strongest point because Oprah speaks her mind and speaks the truth. She is not afraid to cry and she is not afraid to express her emotions.
When you watch most TV newscasters you will notice that they have a very straight and plain face and they are not very expressive. I was watching Oprah the other day on a show about going green, how we all can preserve the environment and still get our laundry done. One of the things they suggested was a low-flow showerhead. Oprah says, "Girlfriend, you know, I can do everything else but I love my strong shower, and I am not gonna do that. That is the one thing I am not gonna do for the environment." She is honest and people really appreciate that.
If there is anything that I can convey to everybody listening out there is that we have too little honesty in the world today. The truth-tellers are the people we want as our leaders and who we look up to and who we aspire to be. Many people tell me that I am the most honest anti-motivational coach because I tell the truth about what it takes to get on Oprah. I want you to know that this is what it takes to get a six-figure book advance. This is what it takes to get on Oprah. If you are willing to do it you can, but it takes that willingness and it takes a lot of hard work.
And just not anybody can do it--that is a big lie. Not anybody can do it and obviously very few people do.
